Bio, Mission Statement, & Partners
Born and raised in Oakland, CA, Machel witnessed a complex cross-section of social justice issues, oppression, poverty, and struggle. From an early age, he recognized the profound impact of socioeconomics on mental health and overall well-being, inspiring his lifelong desire to serve as a bridge between “us and them.”
After completing his undergraduate studies, Machel began his career in youth development as a youth counselor before transitioning into homeless outreach, working as a case manager and counselor. Frustrated by the limitations of referring clients to resources rather than providing direct support himself, he pursued further education. During graduate school, he gained additional experience as a GRYD (Gang Reduction Youth Development) counselor. Upon earning his graduate degree, Machel became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a role he continues to practice today.
During the pandemic, a time when socio-economic and mental health challenges reached unprecedented levels, Machel founded Best Community Therapy. The organization began by producing online mental health content aimed at reducing stigma and increasing accessibility. A year after the pandemic, Best Community Therapy expanded to host community events, including homeless drives, community discussions, youth empowerment camps, healing circles, and referrals to outpatient psychotherapy. In June 2025, the organization earned Non-Profit 501(c)(3) status and began seeking funding to expand its impact further.
